Not even close.
That’s not what would happen. You think state legislators aren’t puppets for special interests ?
National parties and interest groups would TELL the states who to elect.
Imagine.
I can, but they’d get into office by appointment rather than election, i.e. appointed from levels above state government.
Being in Texas, you know that your legislature can’t even elect a Conservative as House Speaker. The RINO Dewhurst would’ve handily defeated Ted Cruz with the corrupt Demonrat/RINO coalition in place.
“Republicans” like Willard the Rat. You’d never get a Conservative again, certainly not a fiscal one.
It would take away the money corruption. A great idea.
The Senate was dysfunctional long before the 17th. When this nation decided to mass enfranchise folks (more democracy) and move away from republicanism is where the left took over.
How exactly would it do that? You do realize the states appointed senators for over a 100 years or so right? The 17th amendment is only recent by comparison and it did not fix anything or make anything better unless you think concentrating power in washington has been a good thing.
Yep
Folks that have these notions that with repeal of the 17th that the Senate would somehow stop being corrupt and would elect people worthy to be portrayed on Mount Rushmore (or Mount Olympus) ignore the realities of today’s politics.
Name them. Who are these magical people that will suddenly be elected ? And I'm sure Republicans in IL and NY, et al, thank you for supporting their complete disenfranchisement. I'm in a GOP state (albeit with rodent legislators as my "reps") and I do not want them electing my Senators.
No. Many blue state only elect Democrat senators because the urban areas with high populations can out vote the suburb and rural areas and counties that are largly conservative.
Maryland and New Jersey are prime examples.
I’m a political historian. There’s no argument I’ve heard that could make the case that repeal would somehow improve the present situation.
The Senate that the Founding Fathers envisioned never worked as planned. As soon as the Senators discovered they didn’t have to resign if the state legislature directed them to vote differently, that was the beginning of the end. It’s been a generally dysfunctional body since the early 19th century.

I don’t like but on this issue he is spot on.
Appomattox cleared the way for Fedzilla.
Do you think the Utah legislature would elect Romney? He has received a ton of out-of-state support running for office on his own. Even so, I would trust the state legislatures more than the current means.
