Just a tip for anyone wanting to listen to hams, etc.
Make sure the radio you buy has SSB, single side band.
ShortWave and SSB.

For sure. My yachtboy does and even came with an auxiliary shortwave antenna.

Ham radios don’t lose tower in large outdoor gatherings.

You are correct. You can not encrypt messages.

I see CB radios coming back. My original, made in Taiwan Cobra 148GTL and 29LTD may come out of storage soon.

Good radio, but a radio needs a good antenna. To pick up some stations you may need to simply connect a long wire to the antenna jack. Antenna for shortwave also need to be off the ground, so getting a long piece of wire and getting it even 6 feet off the ground can make a huge difference.

There were a couple decades when the ITU-T standards were my go-to reading each day.

Maybe, maybe not, but they certainly have the equipment to do so at any time. Ham radio, which is shortwave in most cases, also known as High Frequency (HF), is used by militaries around the world and are a prime target of the intelligence agencies.

Thank you. I have a 50’ wire incorporated into (above) my fence line. I used it for DXing years ago with my Great-Uncle’s vacuum tube RCA AM/SW radio/turntable.

Sounds perfect. Maybe, if you’re lucky, you’ll pick up signals from some far off place with intelligent life. Do them a favor and warn them off from coming to this dumb place.
