Most yes. I was pointing out that hunting and gathering as a part of food supplementation was still a part of country life until very recently. So hunter gathering did not totally go away.

There is some misunderstanding about agriculture in the Americas, partly because a good portion was more heavily tree and fish based then European.

You planted a big stand of nut and fruit trees and dug ponds to raise fish.

Unless they saw you putting in the orchards and digging the ponds it looked like hunter gathering to the Europeans. With some gardening on the side. Weren't you lucky to have all those fruit and nut trees growing together and those fish ponds so handy.

But it was agriculture Jim, just not as we know it. :)

It comes down to the definition of "agriculture".

Lots of stone age hunters-gatherers did things to improve the hunting-gathering.

That does not make it "agriculture".

Is a sophisticated system of eel or fish traps "agriculture"? I do not think so. It is sophisticalted gathering.

Is removal of competeing trees around nut trees "agriculture"? I would call it enhancing a resource.

The left continually change the meaning of words.

What we are finding, is people have been very smart throughout the last 50,000 years or more.

We should not think of people as stupid, because they did not have access to the latest technology.

“In the last federally allowed Wisconsin wolf hunt, in 2014, only 3.8% were taken with the use of dogs.”

That’s because they also gave tags to trappers - who completely decimated the packs in a matter of a week!

Hardly any hunters (with or without dogs) other than trappers got wolves in 2014 and their population has exploded since then. Plenty of woodland cover, plenty of rabbit and deer to eat, not to mention the random pet poodle-dog and domesticated livestock.

The tags weren’t sold or passed out.

The Natives get their share of tags due to compacts with our state. The ‘state’ knows what tag numbers belong to the Natives. They don’t hunt wolves and don’t want to. It’s part of their culture to revere the wolf, so they want to makes sure their ‘share’ aren’t harvested.

The way it works is, you harvest a wolf. You skin it, but you also need to keep the body. You have a week or so to have a Warden look at both parts and then he tags the hide so you can send it off for processing; tanning the hide, and/or making it into a mount or a hat or whatever.

No ticket and a legitimate tanner won’t touch it for fear of them losing their license.

Of course, I’m sure there’s some room for fraud, but it’s not like it’s a Nation-Wide election for President or anything. ;)

Same here, never could understand the “Trophy Hunt” thing.

I hunt and fish to put meat on the table, predators are NOT ON THE MENU, they usually taste like crap.

But be advised, any predator that threatens my family, dogs included, will wind up in a hole about 6 feet deep.

Unlike you, I have a backhoe and it makes the digging a lot easier.

(snark, snark)

Trappers received tags in the 2021 hunt as well.

Conditions were significantly different.

Much harder to hunt with dogs without snow.

And how do we know they’re wolves not hybrids? Coyotes have a 24/7/365 season.

The tag is for a wolf.

It is up to the person with the tag, as to what method he uses to harvest the animal.

The previous seasons started with when the ground had no snow on it.

Good for trapping, poor for chasing them with hounds.

I have done a lot of both.

Some of the clans in the tribes have no problems hunting wolves.

Opposing the wolf hunt is more political then cultural.

You bet, but at 70 years old and typical NorCal clay soils, it would take me a month to dig the hole with a pick and shovel.

This time of year it still takes a little while to dig, even with a backhoe.

You take a bite with the hoe and then have to use a shovel to dig it out of the bucket, sticky as all get out , like thick paste.

In the summer it’s like digging in concrete.

Predators do not create a balance in nature.

Balance is not the right word. They are a part of the ecosystem.

Remove apex predators and the ecosystem will respond, often in negative ways. The mass deer starvation of the Kaibab Plateau in the early 1900s and in Yellowstone in the late 1800s are good examples of what happens when apex predators are removed.

Re: 54 - my use of the “respond” is not appropriate. The ecosystem will “change” is more appropriate.

Locally, in a suburban residential setting, deer became pests. For Bambi’s, my yard was part of home.

Then there were rumors of coyotes

The Bamby’s and mothers are gone.

Ditto cats and small dogs let out early in the morning

I asked Beau about this and he said it is extremely rare that Wolves and Coyote mate. Wolves KILL coyotes; that’s all they’re good for, LOL!

Once in a great while if there is a small wolf and a large coyote, he said they might get it on.

At least that’s what it’s like in Northern Wisconsin. Other states? Well, you know how THEY are - anything goes! ;)
