But as much for the profit, the ideology also guided a lot of this extralegal meddling in national affairs, and it is set up to ratchet only one way, closer and closer to the command-and-control regime that may be dressed up with promises of “equality” and “democracy”, but almost completely devoid of any morality or respect for existing law.
This has been the normal state of humanity for as long as there has been organization at the tribal level or higher. A “strongman” or the “ruling class” make exceptions to the “equality” thing, dispensing favor to those who help maintain the existing status, and fending off all those who threaten that exalted state. There is a “pecking order”, in which the stronger assert dominance on the meek, and drive the less aggressive into subservience. That way lies social classes and at the bottom end, slavery, a near-universal trait of every command-and-control regime ever devised by the minds of men. And if the slaves seem recalcitrant, then - liquidation - is the next step, death squads roaming the camps and taking out those not amenable to “re-education”.
This happens over and over in history, with predictable results. When the slaves make a successful revolt, overthrowing the masters, a certain sequence follows.
From bondage to spiritual faith;

From courage to liberty;
From liberty to abundance;
From abundance to selfishness;
From selfishness to apathy;
From apathy to dependence;
From dependence back into bondage.
It is a human trait to not be able to stand prosperity, If there is not enough adversity in their lives, they go out and invent some.
