“You want to ban bikes from roads?”
If they changed their attitude, it might be possible to share the road with them.
“How is it that any of you are Conservatives and yet you have no respect for the life, liberty and property of another person.... Even when they are annoying to you? This sounds like liberal talk, not Right thinking people.”
Yep. Pretty sure those blaming the cyclist engage in some activities that bother other people. I’m a car enthusiast but it’s easy to see how distracted/impaired/incompetent many drivers are. Haven’t used my road bike in years. Safest to ride the mountain bike on property posted “NO MOTORIZED VEHICLES”.
“”In my humble opinion, no responsible engineer should consider this an adequately safe roadway configuration under any circumstances.””
Well we have something in common, mines Petroleum. Back in 94 my partner and I started another company called HWYCOM. Small company that designed and manufactured Break Away and Slip Base sign support assembly’s and the sign mounting hardware needed for both. Needless to say I spent almost 20 years having to deal with engineers in various DOT’s in the south and southwest. Seeing what some of these fresh out of school young engineers come up with and implement sometimes leaves me scratching my head. Sold out in 2014 and was damn glad to get rid of that headache. Now I just stick to oil and gas, an area I’m far more comfortable in. Now my only traffic problems are the damn cows in the road. And they ain’t getting their own damn lane!
I'll tell you one more thing that makes me nervous as hell about designing a bicycle lane: Cyclists aren't required to have insurance.
If a cyclist gets hit by a car on the street, there's auto insurance coverage that is the initial point of claim for any injuries. If a cyclist falls down or collides with another cyclist and gets injured on a bike path, there's no insurance in place so they first look to sue the engineer who designed the path.
I want to ban them from any road with a speed limit over 20 mph. Beyond that all they do is impede traffic creating a danger for themselves and others.
I really wish bikes had to ride elsewhere.
"...this sounds like liberal talk, not RIGHT thinking people..."
“Of course, the liberals in Colorado are already using this tragedy to advocate for dedicated bike infrastructure.”
They steal billions from our vehicle taxes to pay for those bike lanes all over Colorado. Registering a new car in Colorado averages $1,300 for a year.
Wouldn’t work. Bikes travel dangerous roads marked “No Bikes”.
The reason drivers have to have insurance is liability. Everyone is supposed to have medical insurance.
Medical insurance covers medical care. Medical insurance doesn’t cover most costs associated with the long-term effects of injuries — i.e., loss if income, disability, loss of essential function, etc.
“”They should instead advocate for infrastructure to be responsibly maintained.””
So demanding your own personal infrastructure at the expense of others is about as liberal as you can get. My license fee’s help pay for that road, my gas taxes help pay for that road. As I’m using it I’m also paying for it. You pay nothing. This is the arrogant attitude that makes having any sympathy or concern for bicyclists hard for we conservatives to swallow. Yet it falls right in to the liberal way of thinking. Now you want to argue that banning bikes from a public road is the same as a banning a Constitutional Right. That’s even more liberal thinking than wanting your own road with other people who will never use it footing the bill.
Crossing a 7 foot grassy swale.
That’s clear cut vehicular homicide. Does he have some problem with cyclists? If yes, go for Murder2.
That’s a great post. I hate bike lanes for very different reasons. Erratic motorists should be stripped of their driver’s licenses — and have their arms sawed off if they drive unlicensed/uninsured.
There was a similar situation in New York City a few years ago involving some hospital executive who was also one of the leading advocates for cyclists in NYC. She was famous for her habit of cycling to work every day -- even getting big media coverage for it over the years.
She was run over and killed by a NYC bus when she swerved into traffic to avoid a car door that had just been opened in front of her.
As I've said previously on this thread ... some things are so inherently dangerous even under the best of circumstances that they simply should not be allowed to operate together on the same public right-of-way.
"...you pay nothing..."
When you’re on that bike running down the road you’re not paying a damn penny to help fund the road. How you get there and what you ride or drive to do it means nothing. Obviously you know little about DOT’s and the cost of maintaining roads. Now you want them to sweep the roads just so you can run down them for free? You’re not doing yourself any favors in this debate.
"...when you're on that bike running down the road, you're not paying a damn penny to help fund the road..."
And bicycles traveling a public road should have the same level of liability insurance required by any other vehicle traveling the road. I simply want to restrict their use of public roads, but if your attitude is representative of most or all bicyclists You’re the one who will get them banned.
My Dad (B, 1899), told stories of farmers tying Feed sacks to the spoke wheels of cars(1920-30s),. When dogs would bite the sacks, they learned not to chase cars!
