Unless this period creates a vaccine escape variant. I understand that the risk is the highest when you have moderate vaccination rates bumping up against high unvaccination rate. From what I read, that is when the evolutionary pressure on the virus is to mutate toward something that can get past the vaccine.
I know I’m not describing that very elegantly.
They made their choice. They've had months to get vaccinated. Now they're in the hospital, probably most of them wishing they had gotten vaccinated and some denying COVID-19 exists even as it kills them.
I wish they would report the spread of the common cold, along with deaths of people who happen to have a cold when they die.
Then more people might come to understand that being highly contagious does not in itself make a virus a threat. If it’s just sniffles, who cares how many people catch it?

Relax. Only the unvaccinated get tested, so it’s logical new cases come from that group. The CDC has requested withdrawal from the phony PCR tests which cannot distinguish between the flu and CV-19. Bottom line, tests and case counts cannot be trusted.

There’s no real pressure; it’s all to chance. Each replication of a virus is an opportunity for a mistake in the process to produce changes. Most of those changes are bad for the virus. Some have little to no effect. But sometimes a change happens (or multiple changes coalesce) which provide an advantage. When that happens, the version of the virus with the advantage takes over and crowds out the rest.
We saw this in April 2020 when the first variant emerged. It had an R0 (rate of spread) of 2.5 versus 1.3 for the original Wuhan virus. In about 45 days, the April 2020 variant took over new COVID-19 cases around the world. The Brazil, South Africa, and UK variants had R0 in the 4.5 - 5.3 range. Delta (the Indian variant) has an R0 close to 8.
The key to reducing emergence of new variants is to reduce the opportunities for transmission and replication. That means high vaccination rates, reducing high risk activities, and early effective treatment with monoclonal antibody therapy. Each replication is an opportunity for mutation, and variants emerge as a result of mutation. So cut the number of people infected, cut the number of transmissions, and control infection quickly with known effective treatment. Which at this point is monoclonals.

Where are you referring to? I have contacts at Martin Memorial North and South, Jupiter Med Center and Palm Beach Gardens MC. Each has re-opened their "covid wards" and as of yesterday they have yet to get close to 50% capacity. A few severe cases requiring assisted vent.
