Had a chance to grab a Model 99 in .300 Savage. I’m still kicking myself for passing on it.

Local gun shop took in a nice, older 99 in .300 Savage, late last year (IIRC). That was at the height of the current panic, so the owner stuck a $799 price tag on it. It was still there, last I checked. I've been tempted (more than once) to look it over, but figure that would be a waste of my time, unless the price drops...

Gotta love this one, two cult classics getting it done. Would have been more impressive if the 99 was in .303 Savage.

Have a minty 1938 takedown model in .300 Savage in the safe.

My father loved his model 99 in .300 Savage. He killed a lot of deer with it. It just "fit him" perfectly.

I liked the 99, but I like a good bolt gun more. They are a little easier to handload for.

The .300 Savage is an excellent cartridge. The .308 Winchester is a little better, IMHO.

It is easy to load down the .308 to .300 levels.

Apparently the military had a similar opinion, choosing to develop the newer round rather than just adopting the existing Savage cartridge. I always thought it was interesting, though, that the length of the 7.62x51 NATO cartridge case is exactly halfway between the 7.62x39 and the .30-06 (7.62x63) - almost like a committee somewhere couldn't reach a final decision based on the technical merits, and ended up just 'splitting the difference'!

The 99 is a great design. Much better than JMB’s Winchester 1895 (heresy!) as a lever gun for modern cartridges.

First time I saw a .300 Savage round I wondered if the Soviets had “borrowed” it in designing the 7.63 x 39.

Ever heard the joke about who the greatest Soviet inventor was?

My understanding is the U.S. military started with the .300 Savage, but the neck was too short to stand up to use in machine guns.

So they lengthened both the case (changed the shoulder angle) and the neck, and got the .308.

The .308 is a little better cartridge, IMHO, because of the availability of brass and the longer neck for reloading.

I consider the .300 as a precursor to the .308.

The .308 has 20 degree shoulder vs. a 30 degree for the .300, and the neck is .084 longer on the .308.

There is only .008 inches difference from the base to where the shoulder starts on the two cartridges.

No... I was going to say John Moses Browning, then thought better of it and considered.. Uncle Sam?

There are a similarities between the Model 8 Remington and the AK.

Gun Inventors are always "borrowing" ideas from previous generations...

I passed on a Remington Model 8 with the Police Supply magazine mod because it was in .32 Remington and that was not to be had.

I have one in .30 Remington. Brass is not easy, but it is out there.

My father in law has a Winchester 94 in .32 Winchester. The half a box of vintage ammo he has for it is probably worth as much as the rifle is.
