Between the blacks and the Indians, the university was stuck between a rock and a hard place.

40 years ago on the drilling rig we had a spinning thing that you wrapped a rope around to hoist stuff up with. It was called a nigger head. I suppose being white I didn’t give the name a second thought or that it referred to black people - I just thought it was its name!

My niece is in law school there and said it was quite the issue for a few people, but the vast majority went about their business.

Had the Erie Canal been terminated in Black Rock, the city in general would be Black Rock, with Buffalo being one of its districts. Had this happened, our football team would called the Black Rock Rounders (or some such). Given the current zeitgeist, there would be calls to change the name to something less racially offensive. I guess we really dodged a bullet on that one.

I don’t know about Maryland but it North Carolina there is a Mulatto Mountain and a N (that word we are afraid to say) Mountain. They’re up around the Virginia border.

The Maine woods and farms are loaded with boulders of all sizes, some the size of a house, courtesy of the receding glaciers at the end of the last ice age.

Farmers hate them. Loggers aren’t too happy with them, either.
