They’ll often capture the purchase transaction on still camera or video, though, so don’t rely on that level of obfuscation for anything more serious than a practical joke.
Ideally, you would find a hole in the wall shop in a foreign language speaking neighborhood where you are not known. They'll have cameras, but they won't save the recordings for long, so wait a week or two. This doesn't work if your picture is in the paper/on the web prominently or if the object might be trackable (e.g. burner phone).
