Ole Joe was likely qupting the hymn often used at Catholic liturgies based on Isaiah 6:8. The last pol I heard use that and actually sing part of it was B-1 Bob Dornan. And Dan Schutte the composer did not write this as a call to war but as a call to evangelize by word or deed. It happens to be one of my personal favorites at Mass.
