My suspicion is that a perfectly reasonable plan to hold Baghram with the 2,500 troops in country, bolstered by the Afghani army who would have had continued logistical support, was presented to Xiden. His puppeteers said “No, that’s Trump’s plan!” and instructed SlowJoe to stomp his feet, demand a reduction down to 700 troops, and GTFO before his planned 9/11 victory dance. Heck, it probably involved rotating in units with the necessary skill set - maybe even a surge - and that was totally unacceptable to whomever is actually running this country.
Whether milley said stay or go about Bagram Airfield, slow joe and his political cohorts, made the final decision to go.
If milley said stay, then he should have resigned, if he said go, then he should be fired.
That asshole should be gone, regardless of his past advice.

Looking at him testifying about CRT at a Congressional hearing, seeing his jacket (blouse) heavy-laden with ribbons and medals, followed by his performance during this debacle reminded me of the banana republic leaders who knew nothing and had done nothing except pompously promote themselves to extort money from more developed countries. The man should be fired and demoted. He is a phoney and a joke…and cost America it’s national security.
Milley is a Trump appointee. I expect he will be “retiring” soon. The rest will all stay for the usual 2-3 year swamp cycle and then cash out.

Former military here. It is amazing how quickly even a military commander can get serious when you say, “I want that order in writing.”
