Has a computer ever been built that doesn’t have software errors or component defects? I don’t mean in every unit but in some at least. Electronic parts do fail.

You both make excellent points.
Toyota has already said they are going to scale back electric car production because the power grid will not be ready unless it is expanded greatly. Toyota is not confident that will happen.

The movie “Sleeper” by Woody Allen comes to mind.

Shoot, I’d buy one in a second. The automotive future is here. This thread sounds very much like the ones around the feed stores circa 1910. I’ve got four fused neck vertebrae, I’m half blind and I’ll drive till I’m 90 or dead. In five years you’ll definitely be safer with me in this car.

To those who have never driven in China, this may sound like a great idea - but there is no way that a computer can have enough sensors and decision making speed to adjust for driving conditions in any Chinese city that I’ve visited.
The sea of scooters and pedestrians that do whatever they want in China is difficult at best, combined with drivers that have zero driving ability.

If there’s no steering wheel,do you need a license to “drive” it?

I believe NHTSA has been pretty clear that steering wheels will be required for the time being. He’s probably just generating hype.
Anyhow - I doubt the consumer is ready for it, I for one want to be able to drive a vehicle - it would be another form of control otherwise. Imagine, your social credit score is low and your care refuses to take you somewhere. No thanks.

From the article: "He made it clear that this new price point is achieved through Tesla’s new battery cell and battery manufacturing effort, which could reduce battery costs by over 50%." Instead of a $10,000 high tech rechargable battery pack, this new 'econo' version will run on just $5,000 worth of disposable alkaline D-cells. (And skipping the steering wheel will save a little money, too! ;>)

How much will the charging stations cost and how much will electricians charge to install them?
With several Piouses, one luxury ???, and at least 3 Tesla’s on our cul de sac, PG&$ has apparently told potentially new Tesla buyers that no more electric vehicles charging stations should be added.
