Some observations about the question asked and the answers summarized:
1) Pew is a partisan left hack organization;
2) Polled countries - all huge social welfare, givernment- controlled far more than the US.
3) Demographics of those polled in the countries? University types? Multinational-globalist types? People who work for the givernment? People who describe themselves as “liberal”?
4) I studied at university in Canada in early 1980s. While my fellow Canadian friends seemed nice, the non-Quebec students seemed to carry a deep resentment and dislike for American way of life, US Constitution. I am not surprised how low the Canada numbers.
5) Discounting 1 - 4 entirely, since these countries like our gets all their news filtered and censored through big tech, givernment and corporate media, these results are not surprising in the least. Just another bashing of America by the left, when it is the left that has destroyed many things in the country and the reputation of the US outside of the country.
Why would anyone treat America as democratic? Everyone can see that its policy has absolutely nothing to do with what public opinion or electoral outcomes are.
In one way your point has a ring of truth.
Unfortunately, too many people have been bought off by the social welfare state across the board (including non-profit, corporate and university welfare) and are happy living and eating crap sandwiches. They believe and vote that if someone just promises to come in and improve upon the crap sandwiches, including taking more $$$ away from others, then life in America would be a lot better. They either cannot imagine what freedom requires, or they are not willing to do what it takes to be free b/c it is hard work and requires vigilance, and rule of law applied equally.
Because the most common usage of the word "democracy" is to refer to a democratic republic.
You don't have to like it. But it is what it is.
Why are you holding on to definitions that no longer reflect what people mean when they use the word? Do you still speak English the way it was spoken 500 years ago?
Use the term "Pure Democracy" to refer to what you thought Democracy means. And accept that the world has moved on.
That's about the size of it.
Any nation that would copy what America has become is doomed.
A representative government hasn't been on offer since about 1946.

As Victor Davis Hanson laments in a fiery new book, America’s elites have degraded the concept of citizenship to the point that “tribalism and globalism are destroying the idea of America.”
It’s all part of the socialist plan.
What we are seeing is the de-nationalization
of our way of life. Respect for our form of government
is being weaned away from our youth by our very education
system in tandem with the destruction of our faith in
the justice and trust of those who we think we elect.
When our “government” tells us one thing but we SEE the
reality is something different there is a loss of belief
in the system, this is taking place on a daily basis and
I don’t believe it’s by accident either.
Anyone surprised?
Then the question is, who gets to decide what the definitions of words mean? And why do people let them? And why do the meanings of words have to be changed anyway? Is not English a dynamic enough language to create new words to describe new ideas and things? (One cannot find the words “grocery store” or “software” in Latin or 1800s English.)
It is subtle, but not so ... take for example “marriage” .... its meaning is changing right before your eyes! Oh ... and have you noticed the left has moved from “equality” to “equity”, as if the US were founded with the principle to be treated with “equity under the law.” That justifies unequal treatment. The reason to not object by holding fast to words have meanings/definitions is ... what exactly? I won’t recognize the USA in less than 25 years; it is vastly different than it was 25 years ago.
American democracy is on hold for the next 3 years but Marxism is on the march.
It has to be a mega change in the 2022 elections to stop it.
I read this “Spengler” guy a long time ago.
Asia Times.
He’s kind of an idiot. Always has been.
Impeach Brandon.
I’ve NEVER believed in American democracy.
Because we are a constitutional republic. Not a democracy.
The leftists have been having a field day with our nation for decades by injecting radical legislation, rulings, regulations etc into our body of laws and now, we the people are hemmed in.
I'm ashamed, embarrassed and pissed at the current state of affairs. Once the epitome of virtue and righteousness, America is now overrun with sewage and vile leaders and a vile segment of the population.
Anyone can use a word in a new way or make up words. I’ve made up many. And every time someone says “that’s not a word”, I reply, “It is now, I just used it.”
Language has always changed.
In 83 or 84 I took an English Usage class with a bunch of middle aged and elderly female English Teachers. I was probably about 20. And the 80 year old professor was talking about how language changes. And that what’s important is not that you adhere to strict grammatical rules but that you communicate well.
This English teacher in her 60’s spoke up and said “that must be true. One day I asked a girl how she made out last night, and the class erupted in giggles. And one day I said, I got so mad I shot my wad. And the class completely lost it.”
They nominated me to explain the new meanings to her before one of the other English teachers let me off the hook and volunteered to explain it after class.
Do I like that the left changes the meanings of words? No, I don’t. Sometimes the changes are done to be intentionally misleading. Sometimes they confuse things. Sometimes slang takes a perfectly good word and ruins it. But it’s hard to fight.
Look at what certain Freepers did to the name Karen. I hope that stigma goes away. Branden may never be the same either. Although that one is at least funny.
No government will exceed the quality of the press.
Good to know who your “friends” are.
A teacher requirement before being allowed to teach anyone anything : spend a year living in a foreign county, picked at random, at their own expense.
