Why mention Satchel Paige on Veteran’s Day? He didn’t serve in WWI (when he was draft age).
Jackie Robinson was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was railroaded for sitting in the front of a bus, being the ranking man in the bus. As a result, he didn’t deploy overseas with his unit.
All four other African Americans who followed Jackie Robinson into the Major League Baseball in 1947 were veterans, including Larry Doby, Hank Thompson, Willard Brown, and Dan Bankhead, in the Navy and Marines in addition to the Army, and seeing action at Normandy, the Battle of the Bulge, and Italy.
