There was a liquor store in OKC back in the sixties/seventies. Very big, very good prices, lots of business and lots of inventory and cash on the premises. Lot’s of robberies to.
The store ended these robberies when they installed a large balcony across the back on side of the store. There were a minimum of three men armed with shotguns on the balcony at all times. After two or three shootings, the robberies stopped.

If you look at the video and note there was about ten seconds between the smash and both guys running out of the store, no longer a threat, and in Chicago and you tell me you would advise them to shoot them in the back I’d say enjoy your time with Ty in a cell. Second if you do shoot someone the place to aim is center mass not the legs or arms. Third standard answer to the question to why did you shoot is to stop the person from harming you or someone else. In this case they could not make that fly especially with a video. It infuriates me that in 49 states that is the situation. Now in texas what they did would be viewed as “open season”. There you are authorized to protect both life and property. All in my opinion of course.
Never said to shoot a fleeing robber in the back. Learned that in “Criminal Law, Evidence and Procedure” probably before you were born. Son was also a federal police officer and combat countersniper. He knew when to shoot or to use non-lethal takedown tactics.
Sometimes you just have to stop a crime if you legally can and it is the right circumstance. This was a right circumstance if warning procedures were followed. It might have so stoped future armed robberies and saved lives.
