This has been talked about since AT LEAST the mid 90s, when someone from the Smithsonian researched it and provided ample evidence it was NOT ever meant as a slur at all. A few years ago I found something where the Smithsonian had “revised” that original publication, guess the woke crowd got to them and they didn’t have the brass to stand behind their own research which included actual facts.

In recognition of the contributions to our culture and society by black rappers I’d like the name squaw replaced by bitch and ho.

There were never any racists in America, right? Those Indians and blacks are just making it all up. Hypersensitive.

Respect American Indian tribes - but remove any and all cultural and linguistic references to them. Pretend they don’t exist.

Makes sense in bizarro leftist world.

We in Phoenix have a mountain that was named Squaw Peak. Wikipedia says it was named that about 1910. I have a book, Myths and Legends of our own land By Charles M. Skinner/1896 so I know it was named that before 1896. The book includes an old tale about it having a cave and a haunting in it.

They renamed it Piestewa peak after Lori Ann Piestewa, the first known Native American woman to die in combat in the U.S. military, and the first female soldier to be killed in action in the 2003 Iraq War.

I feel the historical aspect of the mountain was lost in this stupid shuffle to be ‘woke’.

here is the story for someone who would want to read it, the book was renamed and reprinted with a woke title I guess.

https://www.legendsofamerica.com/az-legends/

In 2003, newly elected Governor Janet Napolitano petitioned the state board to rename the mountain for Lori Piestewa. The Governor’s lobbying, while ultimately successful, proved to be controversial. The controversy stemmed in part from the fact that governor’s request violated a required waiting period of five years after a person’s death prior to renaming a geographic feature; Piestewa had been killed earlier that year while deployed on active military duty in Iraq.

Done in a big rush.

I’m certainly glad to hear that California has solved all its real problems, i.e., crime, drug abuse, etc., and is now going after the low-hanging fruit of place names.

There is a Negro Mountain in western Maryland and southwestern Pennsylvania. I don’t know if anyone wants the name changed. But it’s there with that name.

Being affected is not being afflicted.

Funny thing about nursing bitterness on any account, including the past: it does nothing to those you are bitter against but it does harm you.

Two Native Americans (NA1 & NA2) were walking on a path in the woods.

NA1: Look, black bug.
NA2: Squash it.
NA1: No, black bug.

(Hint: read NA2 quickly)

In the meantime words like bawd, call girl, cocotte, courtesan, drab, hooker, hustler, prostitute, streetwalker, tart and many others are perfectly acceptable when being directed at women of any color and not just the American Indians. Which group is next and how much of the public’s money should be spent.

They are even expanding on the creation of words when they get rid of others. The term native American didn’t exist until 1948 and wasn’t used liberally until the 60’s. Besides, the term is no more appropriate than its predecessor. “America” was derived from Amerigo Vespucci, a 16th century Italian navigator who was once said to be the “discoverer” of the continent. How can the people who were already here be named with his name?

But the stupidity of the term native American is a blunder as it is. A native is a person born in a specified place or associated with a place by birth, whether subsequently resident there or not. An American is a person that calls themselves a citizen of one of the Americas, north, south, or central. So that monger can be directed to anyone in the western world, living or born and be correct. I’ll bet those of you who fall under this category weren’t aware you were native Americans. Remember that when you file taxes. My wife is a quarter Cherokee and has roots to a tribe in Oklahoma. But she’s no more Native American than I am as I was born in the US, and lived here officially my whole life. These people need to accept who they are and stop recreating those that do.
