Most political strap hangers on both sides of the aisle have no other talent other than kissing up to their superiors. If they’ve spent the majority of their years in subordinate government jobs, think tanks, NGOs or white collar\management jobs in big corporations. (Rule-of-thumb the bigger the corporation particularly if it’s a defense contractor the more government-like they are in operation.) Also, they evolve into walking talking examples of the Dunning-Kruger effect.

I think you’re right that with the number of pastors around him he should have at least heard the Christian perspective. He had been openly pro-homosexual since before his election and had supported an explicitly anti-Christian beauty pagent judge on this subject. I pretty much assumed that he really wasn’t a believer.
Homosexual behavior has many negative consequences and those physical and mental aspects are also why it should be discouraged. That’s what I thought he was probably ignorant about or perhaps didn’t care about.
