The latest offer and plan from Poland to deliver their fleet of MiG-29 fighter jets to a US airbase in Germany, to then be sent to Ukraine from the US, has been ‘rejected by the Pentagon’ and called “untenable.”

This silly plan of flying in jets from Poland would expose them and other aircraft to the Russian S400 anti-aircraft systems installed in Belarus.

If the west pushes this further, I would expect Russia would impose its own ‘no fly’ zone.

I think the Poles played this one smart. Biden team tried to pull a fast one on them. Poland donates the planes to Ukraine, and they end up holding the bag. They would face Russian retaliation - Does anyone believe that Biden will back them up when they face Russia... other than a token support? Not only will they face Russian retaliation, but they lose valuable planes - those Soviet planes are still useful. I am sure the Poles have upgraded the weapons systems and such on these planes.

Additionally, the Poles were facing a PR issue by not donating the planes to defend Ukraine. With the U.S. giving the planes to Ukraine, Poland is not directly involved and they get their planes replaced to help defend their country. Also, now it looks like they are willing to help, but the US is not cooperating.

This very thing was done when the Israeli AF was born in ‘48. Flying Tigers? 1941.
The Tigers were replacing Soviet mercenary pilots that were withdrawn to fight the Germans. Bottom line it has been done, and done relatively quietly. All you need is diplomats who are willing to obfuscate enough to maintain plausible deniability.
