I never understood why they took that in the first place.

It was a large, empty, undefended area where troops and materiel could be staged. The Exclusion Area is not intensively radioactive on the surface--wildlife is prospering. But if tank treads stir up the dirt...

Russia never really was great at war. They just keep throwing bodies at the problem until the other side gets tired of killing them.

The Russian army is built to kill civilians. They’re great at that. Everything else not so much.

I watch the mini series Chernobyl. What happen to those firefighter was beyond horror. At the end the veins collapse and they can not even give them anything for the pain. A horrible way to die. May God be mercifully to them.

Russia had their high point in Manchuria against the Nippon’s. Of course they were fresh off the German / Western Europe conquest.

We might have been able to take them at that point since they put the bulk of their military on the train for China. We could have destroyed the railroads and they would have been stranded on the other side of Siberia. That’s what Patton wanted to do.

We were just tired of war and Roosevelt’s body was still pretty warm.

The Belarusian opposition claims a confidential poll was conducted by the general staff among officers to determine support for joining the invasion of Ukraine, and IIRC it was 60% against.

The Belarusian army may eventually move against Lukashenka but probably not while so many Russian troops are present in their country.

It depends on what your detection method is. Some used in certain technologies is not that specific because of the distance they operate from the source. Close up you can. But I don’t the Russians got up close. They got their information from Intel.

Part of it was converted to Solar generation:
https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2019/05/what-s-going-on-in-chernobyl-today/
So even though the nuclear part of it is condemned, apparently they were still using part of it to generate electricity. That is not the part the Russians were interested in apparently.

A brilliant move, bringing in tanks and heavy equipment to stir up all that toxic radioactive dust around Chernobyl.

Dear God they are mad.

No, they’re Russian. It’s easy to mistakenly believe Russians are “like us” because they are mostly white Europeans. But we see here their Asiatic streak that was bequeathed to Russia by the Golden Horde. This Chernobyl business is something crazy like what the Chicoms would do.

The building was encased (twice now) to contain radiation and contaminates. So no further contamination is spreading out - with the possible exception of ground water issues to come.???

However, the surrounding area, the "exclusion zone" is still contaminated. I think they hauled away some of the worst, but within the exclusion zone there is still contamination.

https://sitn.hms.harvard.edu/flash/2021/radioactive-contamination-still-detected-in-chernobyl-crops/

Interestingly, Strontium-90 is in the local environment. It can be inhaled or ingested through food/water. We know the Russians are foraging for supplies. They might have been stupid/desperate enough to eat something they found in the area, or use wood for cook fires or heat... Strontium-90 is bad stuff once it gets into you.

The firefighters bodies, what was left of them was entombed in lead coffins buried and then entombed in concrete. Talk about dead zones. All domesticated animals were destroyed by conscripts.

Agreed, but Russia’s population peaked 30 years ago. I don’t think they have the population to support anything but local minor wars like Ukraine. They have no economy on the world stage. They are a third world country run by bullies with lots of nukes. If they use nukes they know that’s suïcide so they are really much ado about nothing, unless they want to test suïcide.

As someone who spent the last 10 years of my career working as a Hazmat officer... I can pretty much guarantee that most of the details in this story are completely made up by the fertile imaginations over at the New York Slimes. Simple stupidity rules the world, but the details here do not add up.

“The radiation from weapons grade material would not be distinguishable from the radiation that is present there.”

Not so. U-235 and Pu-239 (weapons mat’ls) are alpha emitters, which can certainly be dangerous, but alpha particles are easily blocked, even by clothing or even cardboard. Beta and gamma emitters are considered far more dangerous and penetrating. Modern equipment can easily distinguish.
