It’s poorly taught, here. Even when I was in school, history was just a list of dates with names of rulers attached. Movement and changes and relationships were ignored. And Europe is a swirling mass of all of these.

I’ve been around a long time. I am 1st generation American on one side and 2nd gen on the other. I grew up in a home that spoke several languages, altho we kids were discouraged from speaking anything other than English & I’ve unfortunately forgotten most of it.

My husband is also 1st generation on one side. Between us, our ancestry covers the Nordic States, The Ukraine, Russia, Lithuania, Germany and Prussia.

Makes for interesting connections.

So I learned to first take in the 30,000 foot view.

Not popular on the forum, though, as you can see.

The validation is appreciated. Thank you.

I regret that I called you clueless.

It was uncalled for.

You obviously have clues, and are not historically ignorant.

We disagree on how to interpret the history.

The Germans got within 7 miles of Moscow. Napoleon burned the city.

Both lost.

The outcome is indeed, as you say, obvious.

No, the Russians burned down Moscow and evacuated the city before Napolean arrived. Napolean couldn't believe it. I didn't believe it when I first read the account years ago. Nobody in history burns down their own cities, but that's what the Russians did.

Napoleon's plan was to quarter in Moscow in the winter of 1812-13 and move to St. Petersburg (the capital) in the spring, but the Russians foiled his plan, ending the new French-based Roman Empire before it began.
