“BLTs are a type of low-energy transfer in which a spacecraft launches 1-2 million kilometers [600,000 to 1.2 million miles] away from the Earth (where the sun’s gravity perturbation becomes dominant), then returns to Earth with a larger radius of perigee than before and a different geocentric orbit plane,” representatives of the Colorado company Advanced Space, which is operating the CAPSTONE mission under a NASA contract, wrote in a description of the trajectory(opens in new tab). (Perigee refers to the closest approach of a satellite to Earth during its orbit.)
