Our only heat was Herman Nelson hot air generators, powered by propane. (Or oil? I don't remember). Long tubes ran up the staircases on one side, moving hot air to the upper floors.
The generators were so noisy you could hardly hear yourself THINK, let alone sleep - and we worked/slept in shifts.

If you were lucky enough to have 'Fine Barracks Accommodations' in the Army, the FIRST thing you learned as a Private was how to fire up the coal-heated boilers so you had hot water and some heat. Also, Good Times! :)

Geographically it is part of Europe. Not withstanding its historical ties to the rest of Europe the UK is generally seen as apart from the mainland with respect to politics and economics — a concept pretty much underlined by BREXIT.
The UK it taking a more proactive stance on energy and therefore will probably avoid some of the pain the countries across the Channel will be facing.
