Well, I’m biased, graduating from UC Santa Barbara with a PhD and always feeling below Ivy Leaguers but when I was on search committees at the University, we ALWAYS put one of the Ivy League people in the final 10 thinking, “surely they’re good.”

Nope. Never hired a single one. Not a single one even made our finals, because in person they were dopes. Sheltered, bubbleized, had no clue how to teach. Terrible. They knew one damn thing: their dissertation topic.

I have the impression that America's "elite" universities have been coasting on reputation for a long time. Knowing only the topic of one's dissertation is not a sign of a good education. You'd think they would at least have some breadth of knowledge from their BA/BS an MA/MS days.
