Before the Hart-Cellar act (pushed by Kennedy), we had pretty high standards to ALLOW immigrants into the USA. We had standards to learn our history, laws and customs as part of the naturalization path to become a citizen. We insisted that the immigrant be capable of self-sustaining employment and saddled another US citizen as a "sponsor" to ensure the prospective citizen didn't falter and fail. We had restrictions on health. Importing the sick and infirm was a bad policy. The Democrats have trashed all of that. There is no lower limit for them. As long as the import reliably votes Democrat, they are happy.

Then why the hell are they allowed in? The basis of our immigration law for YEARS was that the immigrant prove he/she will be able to support himself/herself and be a contributing member of society.

Ellis Island wasn’t set up to welcome immigrants. It was set up to turn back the chronically ill, infirm, criminal or known revolutionaries. The long, winding lines were there to give doctors a chance to evaluate those fresh off the boat and see who should be put right back on it for the return trip. We need more of that Ellis Island spirit.
