It is a lie launched to cover the fact that all the collateral damage in Ukraine is by criminally positioned air defenses which are supposed to defend the approaches to targets, not to use civilian infrastructure for cover.
I am sure that this Polish case is not an accident on top of that. Ukrainians were seeking to provoke an incident this way.

“criminally positioned air defenses”

Not a thing. Air defenses are exactly that, defensive in nature. The customs of war permit such within “civilian” areas.

Read the manuals for the use of heavy SAMs. You place them in residential areas if you want people killed.

NATO also had no intention of absorbing former Soviet bloc territory after 1990’s reunification of Germany. That assurance, through James Baker, was one of the factors the Soviet Union took into account during a mostly peaceful (i.e. more peaceful than Minneapolis) dissolution.

Then NATO accepted: the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Albania and Croatia, Montenegro and North Macedonia.

They are proffering and expediting application for Finland and Sweden, and have stated early and often that NATO membership is on the horizon for Ukraine, after the Western Maidan coup in 2014.

What do you think this looks like to the Russians? The same thing as the commie revolutions in South America and Cuba would look to us, if the commies had just recently overthrown Mexico or Canada as well (in Canada’s case, they kinda did).

Russia is simply Eastasia. We have always been at war with Eastasia. Don’t question it.

All this talk about American kids fighting in a kinder, gentler non nuclear war with the Russians. A theater of operations on the order of the magnitude of WWII’s Eastern Front on steroids unfolding at blitzkrieg warp nine speed. The only American troops who will die near the border will be those placed there solely for the purpose of being the trip wire. I think the 82nd and 101st are both deployed so in theater. Probably within hours of the trip wire tripped we’d cross the nuclear threshold. If anyone cares to look at the reason Reagan and Thatcher had to have theater nukes in Germany as a way to stop the massive, unstoppable Soviet armored invasion through the Fulda Gap, you’ll see a similar situation. At that time we had a “no first use of nuclear weapons” policy, with the caveat, a violation of your “no first use of massive armored formations” will void our policy”. The Russians announced last spring that they were deploying similar systems for the exact same purpose that Reagan had. Remember, today massive NATO armored formations sit at their fail safe positions, a days tank ride from Moscow. This is how it will look, my nightmare.
