Wait a minute. Bakhmut is part of Donbas and eastern Ukraine; that part of Ukraine that Russia “annexed.” So, Russia already “took it” when it annexed it; no? So, Russia is razing its own territory? If Ukrainian forces have been so thoroughly defeated (that’s what you propaganda peddlers keep telling us), why is Russia destroying its own?

Moscow Times headquarters were relocated to Amsterdam in the Netherlands in response to restrictive media laws passed in Russia after the invasion of Ukraine. The website was later banned in Russia.
But you have been telling us that there are no Ukrainian forces left in eastern Ukraine to put up any fight at all, and that they have all been thoroughly defeated. Or, are you claiming that Russia needs to destroy Bakhmut in order to save it?
The Ukrainian defences have this city as a lynchpin of their entire defensive positions. Today the commander of the 93d Bde was wounded and both he and his unit are evacuating from the city.
I think that is a adequate reason to defend and value territory.
As others have pointed out, it’s also a meat grinder for the Russian Army. The battle for Stalingrad was so bitterly fought at least in part because if its symbolic value. The crossing of the Rhine in 1945 was a symbolic and propaganda set back for the Nazis. It’s hard to pretend that you are winning the enemy is on your soil.
People will fight to defend their homes, and their home country. Wars are won by tactics and strategy, but symbolism and morale cannot be discounted.
