Incredible -- not believable. Now used for emphasis.
Amazing -- to amaze. Now used for emphasis.
People misuse random words for emphasis, until they've beating all the meaning out of it. Until it's no longer good even for emphasis, because everyone uses it to describe every mundane thing.
So they go on to misuse and enervate another word.
It’s quite Orwellian. As illiteracy spreads, words lose their nuances. A dozen or more different words are beaten into a single word, such as doubleplusungood.
