I’ll risk saying why.
Because the people in Rhodesia and South Africa fought back when families were raped and butchered with blades to end racial segregation and promote Mau Mau tribes and Marxism. They lost in the end but at least can be proud they fought back.

I have seen many places where law enforcement said you are not allowed to do this. They all said you would go to prison after getting sued.
I was thinking something along those lines as well.
When people no longer trust the police to protect them, they look for alternatives. Some of those alternatives may not be legal.
I’m noticing that the media has been obscuring the faces of the thugs. In this case, the faces are obscured and the hands of two of the thugs are lightened to appear white.

The Rooftop Koreans were conservative ROK Army veterans. Chinese in NYC are almost universally Democrats - and believers that a strong central government will protect them from local corruption. Since this doesn’t even happen in China, I’m not sure why they hold on so hard to the fantasy, but…
