This is incorrect. Bromhead had been in the army for 12 years. He commanded that company for 10 years. All of the defensive works at Rork’s Drift were laid out by him before Chard returned from Isandlawana. The man was an experienced infantry officer, not some scion of a British Nobel that bought his son a commission in the British Army
