I hear you. Reason why I gave up the motorcycle. God be with these people and their families.

I’ve driven that road when dogs are running across the lanes people slam on breaks, try to save dogs running in traffic. It is crazy town driving anywhere near Baltimore.

My beloved Monte Carlo, 2002 - got rid of it 2 years ago - had a long C pillar made really bad by that thickness for that whole “strong-box” principle. Worsened by the higher-than-used-to-be headrests.

I developed a particular lean-over when having to look behind me on driver’s side. I knew exactly how I had to twist my body to see out that back sliver.

In the old days I just turned my neck any way obvious. Today I have to move by back and my rear end.

Oh but they were probably illegals…

How does that add to the story?

My own kid applied for a flagger job
Maybe his death wouldn’t be trivialized by some righteous jerk speculating he was an “ illegal”

How do you know?

It was a beautiful day yesterday. Including at lunch time.

There was decent traffic around as usual, but not quite the horrid “rush hour” which in that exact location, is stock-still.

The actual cause of this particular tragedy was that there was an opening in the con zone, and the car got knocked into it. Nothing to do with speed.

And I'll say it again about the hand-wringing about speed in these zones - you are just as dead at 50 mph as at 70. The speeds they allow in those zones are just as likely to kill those workers.

It is exactly like the face masks. Smoke&mirrors and kabuki theater.

No matter how safely you drive on the road, there’s always
that one idiot out there. And with the collective IQ of the
US taking a dive these days, there seem to be more and more
of them out there.

I’d like to think I could make that one small move that
would save myself and others in my vehicle, but there are
times when you have no chance whatsoever.

I’ve tried to become more cognizant of cross traffic at
intersections.

Look at the photos. This work zone was walled.

I saw that. I'd have to see the final report on this incident to determine exactly what happened here -- particularly with regard to where the workers were situated.

I drive through a long-term construction zone on a regular basis that looks very much like this. During peak traffic periods the travel lanes are all open and the work progresses within the area delineated by the concrete barriers. During off-peak (overnight, on weekends, and in the middle of weekdays) periods, there is an extra lane closed in each direction adjacent to the concrete barrier for construction vehicles to operate and/or for trucks to remain stationary while they deliver materials to be delivered to the site.

Since this incident occurred around the middle of the day, I immediately wondered if work was being done outside the concrete barriers.

One thing is for sure ...

If that car ended up between the concrete barriers and speed was NOT the determining factor, I think the manufacturer of the concrete barrier might have some serious legal exposure here. The engineer who signed off on the construction zone design might also have a big problem if the barrier design included in the specs wasn't appropriate for the speed of traffic on the highway.

Yes.

It could be anything from an enraged driver being a jackass to someone having a medical event or just someone coming over into a lane and clipping someone in a blind spot.

Many of us come onto this website for the sole purpose of getting pointers towards current events without the media steering us where they want us to go on the intial exposure to it.

This lets us crowd-source the circumstance of a situation, which is very useful, but in that process (in the fluid interval before the outlandish takes are shot down by the “crowd”) many points of view may come into play.

It is definitely a double-edged sword, but I have always felt the double edge is more than offset by not having Leftist dweebs telling you what they think you should know, so...we should always keep that tradeoff in mind.

The barriers are not the problem.

It was a wide-open access space in the barriers she ended up in.

I agree, time to rethink how the access is laid out, ie; an entrance 90 degrees to the flow of traffic comes to mind.
Not always the most convenient for the flow of trucks, I admit, but 6 dead workers is not acceptable, and certainly can be avoided.

Does the back up camera see directly.behind only, or does it look for cars approaching from.the sides?

The backup camera only has so much vision offsides, especially close behind you. Rear cross traffic alert is what warns you of traffic approaching from either side of you. I have both on all of my vehicles and it warns me of vehicles as well as pedestrians. Two of my vehicles also have reverse automatic braking, which applies the brakes if I'm about to run into something while backing up.

It depends.

We have a GMC and Toyota. About same age.

GMC is not very clear, doesn’t have too much wide-angle peripheral. But it is angled up a decent height.

Toyota is better overall. Has more peripheral, is clearer, and adjusts to light conditions better. But it is angled more to the ground, as if you’re really concentrating for parking.

So, they vary.

Both have sensors for peripheral movement including sounds and visual in the screen. Those are pretty goo. But I don’t know how reliable they will be for more than 5 years of aging.

The barriers are not the problem.

How do you know that? That seems like an odd determination to make at this point in the aftermath.

It was a wide-open access space in the barriers she ended up in.

I'm not sure what the "wide-open access space in the barriers" is. Do you mean the space between the barriers, or was there a gap in the barrier somewhere that allowed the car to get through?

P.S. — I’m only basing this on the photo at the top of the thread. I see no gap in any of the barrier lines there.

This is the median. They are surrounded by Jersey barriers. But there are openings in these for the workers and construction vehicles. That is how she got in.

If the driver flipped over the barrier to get in, that's one thing, but if they entered straight in at the beginning of the construction area, the work crew was missing a crash barrier or attenuator truck to protect them.

Not a surprise. People driving around the DC/Baltimore area are literally braindead. Like this one, who is now braindead and when he wakes up he’ll wish he died too.
