RE: A popular of less than 5000 Russian settlers and pro Russian separatists arbitrarily declared themselves the governments of the Donbas without consulting the settled population of the region.
I’m just curious, where did you get the 5,000 figure from? I had the impression that it was much higher than that to a point where a referendum would be needed.
The storming of public buildings in Donetsk and Lugansk by Russia backed paramilitaries including Girkin / Gubarev.
In April, About 1,000 people attended the rally led by Denis Pushilin, aka deputy “people’s governor” Pavel Gubarev.
On April 6, about 2,000 pro-Russian protesters gathered in Lenin Square.
If you add the attendance of the protest gatherings outside at the time to the headcount of the separatists occupying civilian administrative buildings together (ignoring a vast overlap) they still don’t hit 4000.
As far as I can tell, no more than 400 people had a direct influence on the takeover in Lugansk.
In actual fact the LDPR never held more than a third of the Donbas until after the 2022 Special Military Operation. They blocked elections in 2019 because they knew they didn’t have a cat in hell’s chance of winning.
