It was the news of the Emancipation Proclamation that got to Texas. The 14th has nothing to do with the freeing of the slaves. And slaves in states not controlled by the Confederacy were not freed, since the Proclamation was issued by Lincoln as a war measure to deprive the South of the slaves’ labor.

It was the 13th Amendment, ratified on Dec. 6, 1865 that freed all slaves in the U.S. regardless of where they lived.

As for it being a ‘black holiday’, it should be remembered that slavery didn’t end in the U.S. by the action of black people, but rather white people, however politically incorrect that fact might be.

I do have a problem with the holiday’s official name—Juneteenth, National Independence Day. I’m pretty sure we already have an ‘Independence Day’.

I’m fine with the holiday, though it is a pretty minor one in the annals of history. But, whatever. We have a day named after a groundhog.

What annoys me is the name “Juneteenth”. It only reinforces the [mostly false] perception blacks are too ignorant, uneducated and slow to use proper English. “Ebonics” is not a language or even a slang. People whose phrasing is called “Ebonics” are universally morons.

Juneteenth . . . is celebrated on the anniversary of the order, issued by Major General Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865 proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas.

I hate to break it to these people, but General Granger was white.

Originally, but Juneteenth has gone national now. It’s a federal holiday since 2021, but even before that there were local celebrations and commemorations.

The Black/White racial aspect of gentrification is noticeable, but Blacks can also be gentrifiers. There’s controversy online between African-Americans who feel guilty about being gentrifiers and African-Americans who claim only Whites (and Asians) can be.
