The images in the film look familiar. No longer are we seeing drunks passed out in a doorway.

These folks look like they just dropped suddenly wherever they were, hanging over a fire hydrant or whatever. Different drug and different scene. I’ve seen a few on the Upper West Side, in the very center of the sidewalk, their belongings strewn around them.

I hate when they call alcoholism or drug addiction a “disease.”

Dont quit your day job to give out medical advice.

Horrific footage shows the devastating toll the democrat epidemic has had on Philadelphia. i bought a shovel from a hardware store many years ago that is no longer under the el. Used it yesterday. There were functioning stores and people there 30 years ago. About 10 years ago I helped a guy from Harrisburg on July 4th. He had barbecues in needle park every year and gave out food and prayed for the addicts. My house is two miles from there. Harrowgate was know for it’s pure water and was a vacation refuge from the city in 1800.

It’s not medical advice, it’s an opinion. And he’s right. It isn’t a “disease”, it is a weakness, a personal failing. You can blame the alcohol or the drug, but in the end, people choose to do what they do. Any recovered alcoholic or drug addict - the honest ones, anyway - will tell you that they, and they alone, were the cause of their addiction. Calling those things a “disease” implies that the addict is a victim of something over which they have no control. And that absolves them of their responsibility. Animals have no control over what they do, but people do.

How is addiction in any way a disease? Seems like a very convenient excuse, but words still have meaning.

Me too. Alcoholism and drug addiction cause all sorts of physical problems but that is not equivalent to getting pneumonia.

Pneumonia is a disease. Pancreatic cancer is a disease. Multiple Sclerosis is a disease. We have Lou Gehrig’s disease. There’s polio.

It’s insulting to act as though someone struggling with Huntington’s is no different than a junkie.

causing increased overdose deaths

They say this like it’s a bad thing. Junkies are junkies BY CHOICE. Nobody stuck a gun to their heads and forced them to become junkies, but when they overdose they tie up ER resources that could be used by people with real emergencies like heart attacks, automobile crashes, strokes, shootings, etc. I have no problem with some half wit deciding to turn into a zombie who lives for drugs. What I have a big problem is when these junkies cause problems for others - stealing, robbing, squatting on someone else’s property, using up limited health care resources, sucking up our tax dollars, etc. Be a junkie if you want, but if you pass out in the street I’ll just walk around you and keep on going.

Alcoholism is not a disease. Drug addiction is not a disease. They’re a lifestyle choice.

I went to Philadelphia once on a business trip. The Avis people gave me a pamphlet on how to handle a carjacking. I decided not to go there ever again.

All a result of America’s open border policies and our federal law enforcement agencies turning a blind eye to the drugs that are flowing across the border. In addition the Soros appointed prosecutors refuse to charge the criminals with drug crimes but instead return them to the streets asap. Many times the thugs are awarded damages for being troubled by an arrest in the first place.

By the way, I thought “social justice workers” were supposed to solve this problem. What happened?

Self inflicted, but why? Why in the world would anyone, no matter how crazy, want to do this when they see the results all around them?

Calling those things a “disease” implies that the addict is a victim of something over which they have no control.

Do you feel the same way about diabetes? Do you understand that alcohol affects the brains of different people in different ways? Do you understand that some peoples brains are triggered by stimuli while others wont..ie..gambling, sex, alcohol, drugs, certain fears, etc? If you are objective you have to admit that this is a physical phenomenon that people are born with. That means that they do NOT have a choice in how their minds react to different chemicals/stimuli. Some people have an "alcoholic gene". That has been medically/scientifically proven for over 100 years and socially demonstrated since the beginning of time. And I believe that you know it. Why not say it and accept it?
