As long as there is a shady recycler who will pay for it this will happen. But fifteen years ago the police were really on the scrappers in the bay area so that you had to present current ID and depending on what you brought in you would have to wait one to two days so that they could verify there was no criminal act involved. Of course even fifteen years ago the bay area was a very different place.
Next step: EVs must carry a cable to plug into the charging station.
Nothing new. In the 69’s when “exotic” place like the south Bronx and Bushwick really went down the 💩er first thing the “college graduates” went for was the copper wiring in the abandoned buildings. Hell, oftentimes times they stole the copper in the buildings that were still occupied.
I’m surprised it took this long. Copper is quite expensive. And this is an easy steal.
Not sure why the thugs bother, well they are dumb thugs. That amount of theft / vandalism IF CAUGHT probably lands them in jail for a few months as it will be in the neighborhood of $30,000 to repair. Even if they get away with it how much copper could there be and worth how much? This is Oakland, thugs can walk into any store and take what they want as long as it doesn’t exceed $500 and get a slap on the wrist if anything.
