I imagine some are thinking - less people breathing would make the remaining air last longer
I think 3.A CBS guy, David Pugh, went last summer
and I think there was one other.
Great CBS vid on his trip
Do you have a link to that?
Actually a CBS guy went last year.
David Pugh
Yeah I I saw that......what you get when you virtue signal instead of letting the best you can find do the job.....I knew that warped philosophy would kill someone one day but I never thought it would be applied to a vehicle venturing 2.5 miles beneath the waves.......crazy.
The CEO said they took several with them
No there have been prior dives. And they should have x-rayed the carbon fiber hull after each one to confirm it’s structural integrity had not been compromised.
I have a feeling they got crushed, if that’s what happened it probably was quick and it didn’t give them much of a chance to think about it. I think there are better ways to commit suicide instead of going down in such a death trap. But at times being smart and having common sense are miles apart.
Danger is a part of life. They probably had more odds of getting killed driving I-40 through Memphis, South Chicago, or Oakland.
Except that Canadian vessel heard pings
at regular intervals
Battery operated bluetooth at that. Have you ever picked up a battery powered remote and it didn't work, yep, me too.
Yeah, at one point in the article they mentioned the 1st dive and I misread it. You are right. it was the third time.
(Putting on my flame-proof undies here)
Everyone seems shocked that they would use an off-the-shelf video game controller to control and “fly” the sub. As someone that is in design and engineering, if given the choice of:
A)A One-off custom built prototype controller that does exactly what the game controller does efficiently and precisely with limited hours of testing and using off the shelf standard parts all having to integrate perfectly, or
B)A mass produced and quality tested and proved devise that does exactly the same thing, does it well, has been upgraded over years of use to do exactly what it’s meant to. Also, it can survive teenagers who just drank an 8 pack of Mountain Dew and throws them around when their buddy just killed them in a death match and then beating them against the floor in anger. (I have raised teens with those things, I know what they can take).
Honestly, as long as it wasn’t wireless without a backup somewhere I think I would take the controller TBH.
That's bad. They have less than 24 hrs of breathable air. Even if they find it how are they going to have time to retrieve it and bring it up 12,000 feet?
Yes, and this case is especially bad cuz we’re looking at a very slow death, usually thrill seekers die quickly.
Maybe someone forgot to pack extra batteries?
This could be one of the most stupid, utterly avoidable, Idiocracy themed disasters in history.
From Insider magazine...
“In 2018, a lawsuit from David Lochridge, OceanGate’s former director of marine operations, highlighted concerns about “quality control and safety.”
A 2019 company blog post said that a desire for rapid innovation was at the heart of OceanGate’s decision not to classify its vessels, which is a standard regulatory process.
And in a November 2022 podcast, he lauded the benefits of taking risks in life to CBS reporter David Pogue, saying that “at some point, safety is just pure waste.”
OceanGate, which did not respond to Insider’s queries on these comments, has nonetheless written of its commitment to “high-level operational safety.”
As of Wednesday, the search for the Titan continued, with its passengers, including Rush, believed to have about 17 hours of oxygen left.”
Think about the thousands of people who have climbed Mt Everest. The regular Joe can't do that as a guided expedition will run you $50K at the bare minimum. But saying you climbed Mt Everest has a certain cachet to it, so people are willing to take the risks.
Many dead bodies lie frozen on the slopes of Everest - it is too expensive to carry the bodies down, apparently. Likewise, it will be too expensive to pull the bodies of these five up from the bottom of the Atlantic.
bingo.
