Actually the story says that they were told this by the mechanic. They were unable to save the driver.

I did, I said if the story had legs we will see pics of the dead soon. If it’s true, it’s up to the Russians whether they want it to be a significant escalation.
I don’t think the German people will be very happy about it, so I’d look for the Russian efforts to be focused there.
I’d expect to see those pics no later than Monday or Tuesday of next week if they are going to appear. Probably not today.
