Very soon inner city stores are going to resurrect the old Service Merchandise model where examples of product are behind glass, you use a tablet to scan the bar code, you pay, and the order is delivered out front.

Which reminds me of a story. A farmer was tired of someone stealing watermelons from his watermelon patch. So the farmer put up a sign.
“I have placed a poison in one of these watermelons. Guess which one. Better not guess wrong!” Signed, Farmer Brown.
The next day the farmer discovered a second sign in his watermelon patch.
“I too have placed a poison in one of these watermelons. Guess which one. Better not guess wrong!” Signed, The Thief.
They already have that in Philly stores.
Stores will have to go to membership-only models like Costco or Sam's Club. Amazon has stores for its members now as well.
I lived in Center City as a late teenager/very young adult. We never even imagined anything like that could happen. We walked around there in the evenings all the time, going to the movies, nipping in and out of shops. I even worked evenings at Wannamaker’s for a while to earn some extra cash.

Was at our local (rural) grocery store service desk, today, and noticed the baby formula was in a locked case, behind the counter.
I asked, We have to do this….at this store, now? The young clerk said, Yes, ma’am. I said, How very sad. He agreed.

Looting is spreading through the city, groups of youths reported in numerous places. People don’t want to waste the opportunity, I suppose.
