Russian leaders know they have a massive demographic problem, not just with it’s religious affiliation, but with the massive drop it’s population is experiencing.

Red Wings is a Russian carrier and they fly the Sukhoi Superjet which has shorter legs than the comparable Boeing or Airbus aircraft and requires a stopover to refuel.
Due to sanctions Russia does not fly its Boeing or Airbus fleet outside of Russia for fear of the aircraft getting impounded.
Dagestan might not have been the final destination for some of the travelers on the Red Wings plane, after all.
Ironically, there are also reports of Dagestani children on board of that flight, who had undergone medical treatment in Israel.
Israel is a also a popular medical tourism destination for Russian citizens.

There was a thread about the Chinese Air Force buzzing one of our B-52’s, and I posted this comment:
“I’m a WHOLE LOT LESS comfortable with the Chinese acting this way than I was with the old Soviet guys. The Soviet mind had Western philosophical and spiritual underpinnings that made their thinking patterns, and thus their behavior, much more similar to ours.
The Chinese Eastern philosophical and spiritual foundations make them far less like us in their thinking and acting. They do not value human life for any of the substantive reasons we do; they’re FAR more prone to think and act in cold, utilitarian ways, and that makes them much more dangerous.”
That sentiment goes DOUBLE — perhaps TRIPLE — in regard to Islamists. The Chinese may be ruthlessly utilitarian, but Islamists are out-and-out DIABOLICAL; they’re capable of absolutely ANYTHING.
China has a demographic problem too.
Iran has probably the worst demographic problem of any nation in recorded history.
This is why now is the time for these things to happen. They have a window where their population is teetering towards demographic cliff falls and a weak US/NATO - time to move. To use a Biblical Phrase (in the fullness of time).
I agree with what you posted.
Russia isn’t suicidal towards their goals.
China might be as a last ditch effort.
Islam is hell bent on being suicidal towards their goals.
