It’s important to note that Iran didn’t actually attack the USS Samuel Johnson. The ship struck an Iranian mine in the Persian Gulf while escorting Kuwaiti oil tankers under the asinine strategy of flagging those ships as “American vessels” so the U.S. could justify the use of military force to protect them under international law.

I respectfully disagree that the strategy was "asinine" with the OPEC oil embargo still very much in memory at the time. And as to whether the Iranian mine was an attack, what else would it be? Oopsies, we accidentally left a mine out there? Either way, my earlier point still stands that our response to it (Operation Praying Mantis) is a precedent for how to handle the current attacks Iran is doing on US ships.

Iran and Iraq were engaged in their own conflict at the time, and the mining of the Persian Gulf was part of Iran’s strategy to squeeze Iraq by degrading its trade capabilities.

Using U.S. military vessels to protect foreign civilian ships is a violation of U.S. law. Putting American flags on foreign vessels and calling them “American ships” is an outrageous measure to circumvent that law. The law exists for a reason.

No wonder the U.S. empire is collapsing before our very eyes. It doesn’t even play by it’s own rules whenever those rules become inconvenient. We have pretty much reached the point where you’d have to be retarded to take it seriously anymore.
