Don’t feel sorry for a criminal. He got away with bilking the IRS and others, and like a typical criminal, figured he was never going to be caught, and was emboldened by that. Eventually, whether based on his having worked for Trump or not, he would have eventually been caught, because the longer it goes on, the more mistakes these people make. They get sloppy. That is the mindset of most criminals. When they get away with stuff, after a while, they figure they can continue to do it with impunity. He thought wrong.

He is a sleaze and a crook (sounds like he takes after the father) but most of that would have never come to light but for a political targeting by a “Special Counsel”.
Trump had a lot of this sort in his orbit. People insufficiently talented or without the connections to attach themselves to Regime Power. And they saw Trump as a potential Successor Regime that they could be part of.
In an ironic way, Cohen now has enough public recognition and notoriety to be able to join the fringes of the Regime as a “redemption story”.

Trump the single most dangerous thing? That doesn’t even rise to ludicrous. This isn’t debate or any sort of exchange of ideas.

That just proves that he was conducting illegal activities that far back. If you don't want to get caught, don't do bad stuff. He probably figured his relationship with Trump would keep him safe. He didn't count on the swamp spending almost 8 years trying to take down Trump, and anyone else around him. When it happened, the DOJ decided to look into his past, and they found enough to go after him on, not to mention his lying to Congress. They figured Cohen was a weak person who would fold easily. And he was. He was their useful idiot at the time. He turned on a dime on Trump.
The only thing he's proven through all this, is that he was crook before he met Trump, and he was a crook afterward. I have no sympathy for anyone who knows what they are doing is wrong, but goes ahead and does it anyway. I worked in uniform for 25 years in NY State's prison system, and feel sorry for no criminal, because I've seen the way they act when they're incarcerated, and plenty of them still engage in criminal activities behind bars, as they did on the street. It's just a different level of crime. Cohen is still a schemer, and scammer.
