I think Putin believed that his military had been restructured, modernized, and newly equipped with wonderful advanced weaponry, large elite fighting units, and was far more capable than it turned out to be.

I think Putin was also fed a lot of optimistic and false intelligence that Ukraine would welcome his invasion and their leadership quickly evaporate, and that all would quickly become his, with that quick and efficient success elevating Russia’s prestige and cementing his greatness both within and without Russia.

I think he also thought that all this would negatively affect and weaken NATO and any international opposition to him while strengthening him with his friendly nations and those who would start becoming more friendly due to his great success and demonstration of awesome 21st-century Russian power.
