Serving for God’s Sake

Bible in a Year:

They are to . . . [fulfill] the obligations of the Israelites by doing the work of the tabernacle.

Numbers 3:8 When England’s Queen Elizabeth passed away in September 2022, thousands of soldiers were deployed to march in the funeral procession. Their individual roles must have been almost unnoticeable in the large crowd, but many saw it as the greatest honor. One soldier said it was “an opportunity to do our last duty for Her Majesty.” For him, it was not what he did, but whom he was doing it for that made it an important job.

The Levites assigned to take care of the tabernacle furnishings had a similar aim. Unlike the priests, the Gershonites, Kohathites, and Merarites were assigned seemingly mundane tasks: cleaning the furniture, lampstands, curtains, posts, tent pegs, and ropes (Numbers 3:25–26, 28, 31, 36–37). Yet their jobs were specifically assigned by God, constituted “doing the work of the tabernacle” (v. 8), and are recorded in the Bible for posterity.

What an encouraging thought! Today, what many of us do at work, at home, or in church may seem insignificant to a world that values titles and salaries. But God sees it differently. If we work and serve for His sake—seeking excellence and doing so for His honor, even in the smallest task—then our work is important because we’re serving our great God. .

Reflect & Pray

How might knowing that you’re ultimately serving God change the way you work? How can you do it with pride and excellence for His sake?

Father, thank You for giving me this opportunity to serve You. Help me to be faithful with the talents and strength You’ve given me to work for You.

I was stationed at Tempelhof for 3 years. Arrived for duty 1 October 1966... the day Albert Speer and Baldur von Shirach were released from Spandau prison. A priceless, unique, once in a lifetime experience I will always treasure.

Howdy, Kathy.

I hope you’ve gotten a lot of rest over the holiday weekend. Pay Week lies ahead.

It looked like our weather didn’t know what to do today. Rain one minute, then snow, repeat, repeat, repeat.

I was stationed in Wiesbaden, but I was was TDY to Tempelhof. I was in the RAPCON, watching aircraft fly in and out of Berlin, via the 3 corridors. It was interesting.

I was stationed at Tempelhof for two years starting in 1964. USAF Russian voice intercept operator. A dream assignment. Studied classical guitar with a true master on Solmstrasse, had an apartment with some of the guys on Paulinen Strasse and a one-lunger BMW motorcycle. Naturally, for the last year of my enlistment I was shipped to Shemya AK. Sigh. The country was really different back then. The Berliners I knew were still talking about the airlift. I wonder if the Luftbruecke Denkmal is still standing.

Good evening, Mooch...part of the lead up to the Airlift.

Hope your weather is behaving. Ours is not...it’s been above freezing the last few days and today we had rain. Rain on snow and then freezing is not good. Thankfully I work from home and don’t have to go out til Thursday. Hopefully we will get a little snow by then....regardless, driving will be dicey.

Good evening, radu...hope your weather decided what it wanted to do.

We had a bit of sun, then sleet, then a bit of snow. Last couple of nights have stayed above freezing, but that is about to stop...back to the 20s and teens.
