Not for long. Serbia was quickly overrun and became an Ottoman vassal. Then, variously, the Hungarians, the Austrian Habsburgs, the Poles and Romanians have had good reasons to make the claim. Even the Croats were, for a couple of hundred years, under the Austrians, the main component of the “Grenz”, the border protection force, between Islam and the “west”. Serbian refugees also settled in what is now Croatia, entered Habsburg service and joined the “Grenz”.

Yugoslavia was not under the USSR. For all his faults Tito kept them independent.

Revolutionary Democracy is a dangerous game.
Anyone can claim to have the most votes, or the most legitimate votes, or the least number of illegitimate votes, and/or they can claim to be victim of voter fraud, voter intimidation...faulty counting etc.
Or, they can have the most votes. And it is those committed democrats extolling the virtue of universal suffrage that are the most dangerous to the rule of law. And individual liberty. And religious liberty.
