What blew out appears to be the plug where an unused exit door would be. The plane was in maintenance at the airline a couple weeks ago. I wonder if they did any work in that area?
Lol nobody read the article. It was normally an emergency escape hatch option that would open inwards. But... Alaska air decided not go with that option and Boeing had secured the hatch and made it look like a regular part of the wall.
Boring messed up really bad.

The article says that Boeing provides an option to have a door or window panel installed in that hole. Alaska chose a window panel.

Yes, it’s a plugged door with a window installed in the plug. The whole door plug blew out, not just the window panel.
From other sources, this was a plugged door, an optional emergency escape door location that is used depending on the seating layout (and I suspect, the stretch).

Given the labor issues AA has been having of late, I’d also be concerned about sabotage.
That makes sense. Seating was NOT configured for an exit row there.

Evidently, it depends on how seating is configured as to whether an emergency exit is required. If the plane is configured for all economy class with seating for 220, then emergency exits at the blowout point would be required.

Boeing took over McDonnell Douglas, but the financial mentality of McD took over Boeing.
The finance focus seems to work in the short term. But the cost cutting means the engineering soon turns to crap, and the product becomes substandard and dangerous.

You are exactly correct. The beancounter mentality of McDonnell Douglas took over and Boeing turned from excellent to mediocre.
Is the plane still covered under warranty? Is the part covered?
This is a rare case where reading the article becomes important to an understanding of what was really going on.
Every blown out window I have had knowledge of on a large aircraft at altitude, has turned into death when an individual seated close to the window has been partially sucked out of the window. I think two cases if memory serves. One civilian and one military.
In this case a truly unusual circumstance when a window that might have been a door under other circumstances, departs the aircraft leaving a hole much larger that could easily suck out passengers. They might have been very fortunate to have been belted in while the aircraft was on climb out from Portland.
Cell phones and a shirt are replaceable.

Boeing has really gone Shiite to since they moved Company Hq to Chicago. Bring it back to Seattle and fire all the non-engineers they brought in to run it.
