The distance traveled by droplet nuclei (particles of saliva/mucus emitted from the respiratory system) has been studied since the 1920s. There are special lab facilities dedicated specifically for the study of aerosol transmission of pathogens.
This is actually a very complicated topic. The original guidelines of 2m/6 feet came from work published in 1934. (ON AIR-BORNE INFECTION: STUDY II. DROPLETS AND DROPLET NUCLEI. And the topic has been of considerable scientific interest ever since. The size and durability of droplets is important; small particles might last longer and travel further through the air, but they also contain few to no virus particles. The likelihood of infection based on the infectious dose--that is, the number of virus particles that a person actually internalizes into the body. So, given the large number of studies on aerosol/airborne transmission of viruses, I am extremely skeptical that Dr. Fauci would have actually "admitted" that the 6 foot recommendation was not based on science. I suspect that what he really said was that the studies had not been done specifically with SARS-CoV-2 virus at the time the recommendations were made, since we did not know anything about the virus in early 2020. In reality, this is a very active area of research.
Now, put yourself in the shoes of a public health official. You have plenty of evidence about the behavior of other respiratory viruses, but none about the new emerging virus. Your job is to protect the public and try to slow/stop spread of the virus. What do you do? Do you just tell the public to behave as usual since we don't know anything about this virus? Or do you issue recommendations based on practices that are effective with other similar pathogens?

I still remember the guy who JUMPED SIDEWAYS as I approached him, although I was still like 30 feet away!
Maybe he was also frightened by what I was wearing, as it was St. Patrick’s Day in 2020, and I had some Celtic garb on. Nothing too extreme, but I was rocking a kilt.

Yep, I saw the same thing many times. People stepping INTO the STREET with cars whizzing by to avoid passing another pedestrian on the sidewalk for a tenth of a second. They were at ten million times higher risk of getting killed by a car than catching a disease in that fleeting instant.
I was on a hiking trail in the Santa Cruz mountains headed downhill on a fairly wide trail, maybe eight feet wide, with a good drop-off on one side and a steep cliff on the other side. An Asian woman was coming up the trail with her young son, maybe four or five years old, both masked. She spotted me, stopped, grabbed her son and instructed him to face the canyon away from me. She turned to face the canyon, too. They both stood there, stock still, facing the canyon while I strolled by. It was the most insane thing I’ve ever seen. I was debating if I’d bother to save them if they went into the canyon. I figured the gene pool would be a lot better without them.

But no TREATMENT based on practices that are effective with other similar pathogens.
Because treatment is verboten. We will just make you sit in the ER with other possibly sick people for hours (because that is really healthy) give you a medicine that kills around 500 people a year, has not been studied as a treatment for this illness, and send you home to get worse.
But note also....that every morning before their shifts, the nurses took a "sunshine walk"...no masks. It was a big deal.
My take...Fauci went back to the 1918 census and picked a bit here and there. Nothing scientific. Plenty of pictures.
What he messed up on was "confining" people. If he looked a little better, he would have found out that in 1918...the were setting up hospitals OUTDOORS for fresh air and sunshine.
And at some point, he did read it....and told us to open the windows and enhance our air filters.
But he missed a beat...again...and ordered beaches closed. He just played games...and we were all victims.
Then some ACTUAL FACTS came out....The Vaccine will NOT keep you from getting the virus....AND....it will NOT keeep you from spreading it. (Fauci had it twice AT LEAST.)
I’m 80...The only good outcome was that I can now get my groceries delivered. At age 80...It’s appreciated and Walmart is absolutely wonderful.
I'll never have any faith in what public health officials/politicians have to say about antthing. It is easy for them to say shut everything down while they still receive a paycheck.
They pulled the “6 Feet” distancing thing out of their ears. This has been known for a long time. The media just refused to report it.

In other words, you have no idea what public health officials do or what you would do if you had to do their jobs.
