Faulty chips don’t work in the cold. This should be elevated into a full blown investigation by the NTSB. If the American public is going to be forced or encouraged to buy EVs they shouldn’t have to worry about freezing or baking to death..
Hey Baby It’s Cold Outside 🥶
Probably. Maybe if it gets posted more, the people responsible for forcing EVs on the American public might dial it back. /s
If only we had a Transportation Secretary who didn’t spend all his time breastfeeding.
Oops.
Always thought the Tesla symbol should add UPID.
So, EV’s are a lot like “global warming”: they’re b.s. no matter what the weather does.
And the best part is, even if you can find a charging station that works, you sit there for an hour in subzero weather while the car charges.
Makes you want to cry like when a Smart Car driver gets T-boned by a log truck.
I’m getting LiPo for my TC in the spring. More juice less weight.
Bitter cold ruins these batteries.
In the charging stations it’s probably some of the electronics that monitors and controls charging capacity/rate/measurement, etc. It could even be software/firmware that sets up charging parameters based on a temperature range .....

The people are wising up...
And it is immoral that I/We have to subsidize someone else's car AND the electricity to feed it.
Surprised an EV fan skulking around here on FR hasn’t invaded this thread yet and breathlessly proclaim that a fix for this problem is forthcoming.
This YouTube Channel for "MGUY" was pointed out to me yesterday by Freeper who_would_fardels_bear, and I had a chance to watch a bunch of them on his channel last night.
I was VERY impressed.
This gentleman is an engineer, and apparently has a few different areas in which he would be considered an expert, but it is clear to me he knows exactly what he is talking about. If you watch these and don't think he does know, please let me know. Really, I am interested to hear why.
I have a degree in chemistry, so I am used to being able to evaluate things, perhaps not as well as an electoral or automotive engineer might, but as someone who has a STEM degree and understands science.
These are the most down-to-earth, brutally honest assessments of EV vehicles at this time I have ever seen. He is VERY watchable, and has great skill in conveying the concepts.
FOR A GOOD, SCIENCE-BASED ASSESSMENT OF ELECTRIC VEHICLE TECHNOLOGY, I HIGHLY SUGGEST THE FIRST THREE OF THESE SHORT VIDEOS IF YOU WANT A PRIMER.
The fourth video is seeing the ramifications of accepting the word of the government that this is something you should do, or purchasing something to be trendy.
I have long thought that apart from the "sledgehammer-in-the forehead" obvious issue that I despise the effort to buy these things at the point of a government gun , much of the analysis of the behind-the-curtain issues that this guy talks about I wholly agree with.
- So, these are the facts as I see them.
We are all aware of the over-arching issue with EVs is that no matter how good the batteries get at this time, or how many charging stations they build, the power grid is completely unable to handle this shift to EVs without the building of more electricity generation plants, and massively beefing up our nation's power grid to distribute the electricity to where it is needed. (And, just to clarify, it isn't that I don't accept that someday these things might be worked around, but with the fundamental issues, it make take decades or more than half a century. Or never.
Anyone want to guess how many additional gas, oil, coal, or nuclear power generation facilities are planned across this country in the next five years? Let's put it this way-according to one article, 90% of the new power generation facilities built in 2023 were "renewable".
Does anyone with half a brain think that is going to cut it with the push at all costs to EV's, there is NO way we will be able to handle that. But there is a bigger problem.
In videos below, the the #4 link on the list below talks about this incident with the cold snap. I suggest watching the first three in the list so when you get to the discussion on the cold snap, you might understand better what the speaker refers to, but it isn't necessary. You can go right to the last one and watch that Charlie Foxtrot in Chicago a few days ago, and still understand.
Lest anyone consider me a Luddite by comparing me to people who were angry with automobiles that forced them away from using horses, these are not even remotely similar. Horses had issues of care, shelter, feeding, cleanup, etc. that automobiles just didn't have. EVs are a different ball of wax completely.
What we are doing now is jumping off a cliff with no safety net at the bottom, hoping that net will be built and installed a few feet before we hit the ground.
I’m keeping that one for further use
“Horses had issues of care, shelter, feeding, cleanup, etc. “
Horses were also dangerous. Very little mention is ever made of the number of people killed or injured by runaway horses, kicks to the head and body (children especially not aware that standing behind horse could be dangerous), horse simply tripping and falling, etc.
Cars of course are dangerous but the great majority of that is driver caused, mechanical issues can cause an accident but even some of that is cured by proper maintenance, so again human caused.
Horses are large animals with a mind of their own no matter how domesticated or trained.
Absolutely! While it is true that there are accounts of people killed while trying to start a car and being hit in the head by the crank when it started up, there are no reports of a human being killed by the car kicking them in the head!
