In Spain and Latin America, you will have people with several last names, indicating their family history, sometimes all the way back to before Columbus.
I don’t know how they get all that info on birth certificates.
Here, in Florida, they are limited to four or five, IIRC........

It is common in Latin American countries to use the father's name followed with the mother's family name. López Obrador of Mexico is an example (his father's family name was López and his mother's family name was Obrador).

Yes, that is true; and especially so if the father’s surname is as common as López, for instance, which is nearly as common as Smith or Miller in Anglophone countries :-)
