I can’t see if the title is correct because the article is behind a paywall. Does the article say “selection chances?”

Here is the article without the paywall. I don’t see that phrase in the headline.

Probably none. Russia is selling oil at a loss to keep the wells and refineries going. Russia halted gas exports for six months, from March to August. That will have more effect than Ukraine’s actions targeting Russian oil infrastructure.

I see. Since you put your comment in parentheses, others are less likely to include that in the search for duplicate threads. Biden seems to be evil at times and completely clueless at other times.

While the halt was certainly motivated by Biden’s politics, one should not underestimate the fact that it is in the best interests of the US and the world that Russian oil stays on the open market.

It is in US interests that Russian oil flows.

Watch what happens to price of oil when the election is over. It won’t be good.

What impact upon our gasoline retail prices does Ukrainian action against Russian oil refinery infrastructure have?

Oil - and oil futures - are fungible and anything that affects the supply is felt immediately.

Can’t you see? If Biden isn’t reelected, he won’t be able to give Ukraine what it needs to continue the endless war, which will still be going on then. Even worse: If Trump is reelected instead, he might actually END the war! Beavens to Hetsy! NOOOOO!/do I really need a sarc tab?

This is why the US has not won a war since 1945....the civilian leadership puts politics ahead of winning.

Gasoline (and oil) is a fungible, it chases the highest price. If the Russian refineries are taken out, two things will happen that will affect our price at the pump.

1. Any time a refinery anywhere gets taken out or shut down, speculators (and to be fair, people/companies wishing to have reserves) immediately move in and purchase gasoline and oil, which drives up the price on all world markets and thus at the US pump. Sometimes within hours.
2. In the longer term, taking out Russian refinery capacity will force Russia to purchase refined products or refinery services from other countries/locations until they can replace the destroyed facilities. Since there’s not a lot of idle capacity at refineries, priorities for who gets what when will be assigned by how much the customer is willing to pay, so the price to refine your oil and deliver your product will go up at all refineries in the classic chain reaction. This will affect even refineries in the US that don’t actually supply Russia directly, as the refineries that do supply Russia will bump less profitable jobs for obvious reasons, which means bumped customers will go to other refineries, which will result in more bumped customers and so on. This will be a bit delayed, but in this day and age that delay may only be by a couple days at most - if that. This will drive up the cost of gasoline at the pump as well as the price of anything using refined petrochemical product.

The problem with interrupting the energy flow to the West is that without it, about half of Western Europe’s economies will collapse pretty quickly, especially in the winter.

And Biden ended the possibility that the US could take up the slack with tankers.
