The story says that pizzerias are firing their drivers, which is a special case.
Ordinary fast foods aren’t laying people off, YET, because they’ve been managing labor tight as can be ever since unskilled worker wages went parabolic in the inflationary recovery from COVID.
What’s happening is QSRs are raising prices $1-$3 per meal, taking meals to $14-$16 at McDonalds etc., and to well over $20 at your Five Guys and Chipotle places. If unit demand drops, then they’ll need fewer workers and layoffs will ensue. If consumers suck up the price increases, than no layoffs.
LOL, we don’t drink - and fast food joints in So Cal do not sell mixed drinks.
Sharkey’s.
This is California - where fast food workers make $20/hour, soon to go to $25/hour and businesses are required to pay $50,000- 95,000/year for insurance - that is if you can find an insurance company to insure you, many have fled the state.
That and worker’s comp are driving prices through the roof - along with business closures.
Went out with two friends to “Islands” - none of us drink, we all ordered hamburgers, one extra order of fries - bill was $90.
Meanwhile, all those fast food economic illiterates that continue to vote for Newsom:
California Fast Food Restaurants Slash Jobs as New $20 Minimum Wage is About to Take Effect

How is this possible?? - said the economically illiterate buffoons.
Will they make the connection. 8 Ball says "no."
I found something I really like at Mikey D’s Sausage breakfast burrito. It may come frozen to the store, but it taste fresh to me. 2 for breakfast or 1 for a snack perfect Little peppers not too spicy, bits of sausage, scrambled eggs and cheese. And not real big.
Three years ago 1 for $2.39 today 3.40 and the minimum wage of $20 has not been implemented yet.
making it less likely teens can get a job while in HS
Came here to say that.
Also, this will spur AI and robotics far faster than anything else.
Ouch. Fancy burger places here are maybe $15-20 for a full meal. That’s crazy
“Now they’re for sure gonna vote Democrat”
Most will. They’ll go and badmouth their ex employers with mushmouth blather about how the Democrats need to stick it to the damned corporations.
Also, now that the pizza place has no more delivery drivers, customers are stuck paying LOTS more to have it brought to them by DoorDash or Uber Eats. MANY will opt out entirely, and just make something at home, instead.
“Yeah - and he’ll escape to Montana after he’s termed out.”
Yeah, and with any luck at all he’ll get eaten by a mountain lion because he’s too much of an idealist libtard f**k to think of packing a sidearm to walk out to the road to check the mailbox at his rural palace a couple miles outta town.
“The few other fast food restaurants I’ve been to lately all use kiosks for ordering and have a skeleton crew handling the food. Local paper says AI will be used for fast food drive-thrus soon”
My local El Pollo Loco (Chain Mexican Chicken joint out West) just put a kiosk in. It is not intuitive at all and made more difficult if using coupon codes and / or Awards points. I don’t go there often enough to probably ever master the kiosk as currently designed. A real live employee walked me through the system, but I imagine a lot of folks will need hand holding. Are they saving on labor? I’m not so sure.

I haven’t been to McDonalds in maybe 10 years. And only then to see what all the fuss was about = the McRib sandwich. Having said that I did add their app to my phone and there are some good deals if you are willing to order though the app. The burrito you like $2.99, Big Mac med. Combo $6.50, 20% off orders $10 or more. I’m in So Cal and there is some tie in promo with the Dodgers after scoring six runs in the Home opener yesterday.Today only free six piece MC nuggets with any $2 purchase. I imagine each franchise can set their own prices so your mileage may very and as you said when $20 kicks in all bets are off.
thanx
