Little lousy sandwiches and watered down fruit juice. I spent all my quarters (there were pay phones in the big holding areas (along with one totally open stainless steel toilet and one seek) calling all my family telling them where I was to have them contant my lawyer to find out what was going on). He was unsucessful because no one could tell him anything because no one could find my paperwork. Somehow someone did have my name on some sort of list, which finally led to them discovering me down in the Toombs waiting, and waiting, as I watched batch after batch of guys being called out.
I should sell my whole short story about the experience.
And in addition to the paperwork, I never got back the keys to my car which included a special key chain of sentimental value. I’ve always figured the motorcycle cop from Queens just kept it.
You could probably get that experience printed somewhere. Let people know what it’s like for those who don’t pay their fines and whatnot.

I read the linked article and there was no mention of it being a supermax. And China town would be a pretty strange place for a supermax. I think this is just a jail, aka "detention center". It did say "the worlds tallest", and I suspect the headline writer just did what headline writers do...
It’s hardly a mega prison, unless they mean it in the context of a city prison, so I think added meaning to the intent of the author.
Need more jails for pro-lifers. Even the repblicans want us in jail.

If things would have gone as they were supposed to go, (1) I never would have been sent down into the Tombs, (2) I would have been givn a DTA (desk appearance ticket), (3) a following notice in the mail with court date, (4) which I would have met, (5) at which time the judge would have told me the neglected fine I owed, (5) which I would have paid and (6) that would have been it. Instead I have an apology letter from the Manhattan DA.

The prison there now is something like the third prison built at that location. The actual structure has changed several times.
